Becoming An Artist

When does someone become an artist? After graduating from art school, receiving a grant, being invited to a festival, selling a work — or simply by declaring themselves one? And who gets to decide?

Becoming an Artist grew out of my own uncertainty about artistic legitimacy and the value of being an artist at all. How long can one remain an “emerging artist”? What defines professionalism — recognition, income, institutional approval, persistence? And what is the role of an artist in a society that does not necessarily need or value what they do?

For the performance, I dressed in a white protective suit and became a blank canvas. Standing in the middle of the space, I addressed the audience with questions about artistic identity, success and usefulness, then invited them to come closer and make me into an artist. Using paint, scissors and small written labels, the audience gradually transformed the white surface of my body. By the end, the “artist” had been collectively produced.

The work questioned whether artistic identity can ever be self-determined, or whether it is continuously constructed through audiences, institutions, recognition and expectation.

The performance was presented at the Live Art Zine opening during the Art Matter festival in Copenhagen in 2025, with support from the FRESH START Nordic/Baltic programme.

Kad cilvēks kļūst par mākslinieku? Pēc mākslas skolas absolvēšanas, finansējuma saņemšanas, uzaicinājuma piedalīties festivālā, darba pārdošanas — vai vienkārši pasludinot sevi par mākslinieku? Un kam vispār ir tiesības to noteikt?

Becoming an Artist radās no manām paša šaubām par mākslinieka statusa leģitimitāti un jēgu vispār. Cik ilgi drīkst būt “emerging artist”? Kas nosaka profesionalitāti — atzinība, ienākumi, institucionāls novērtējums, neatlaidība? Un kāda ir mākslinieka loma sabiedrībā, kurai mākslinieks ne vienmēr šķiet vajadzīgs vai vērtīgs?

Performancei es uzvilku baltu aizsargtērpu un kļuvu par tukšu audeklu. Stāvot telpas vidū, uzdevu skatītājiem jautājumus par mākslinieka identitāti, panākumiem un lietderību, pēc tam aicināju viņus nākt klāt un padarīt mani par mākslinieku. Ar krāsām, šķērēm un nelieliem uzrakstiem skatītāji pakāpeniski pārveidoja mana ķermeņa balto virsmu. Performances beigās “mākslinieks” bija kolektīvi radīts.

Darbs uzdeva jautājumu, vai mākslinieka identitāti iespējams noteikt pašam, vai arī tā nepārtraukti tiek veidota caur auditoriju, institūcijām, atzinību un gaidām.
